10 Underrated Fantasy Anime You Absolutely Need to Watch (Or Else)
Alright, listen up, GEERD-chans. You’ve probably binged the big boys: your “Attack on Titan(Well, I myself love AOT more than anything!) ,” your “Demon Slayer,” your “Spice and Wolf”—okay, maybe not that last one, but you damn well should. But what about the little guys? The unsung heroes of the fantasy anime genre that don’t get the love they deserve because everyone’s too busy simping for the newest overpowered isekai protagonist? Well, allow me—your personal anime messiah—to enlighten your sorry ass with ten fantasy anime you probably missed. Or maybe you watched them, in which case, congratulations—you have taste. But if not, strap in, grab some snacks, and prepare for your anime watchlist to get absolutely wrecked.
Catch a support chair or something, for this Reaper is going to change tones and sing you poetry.
The Twelve Kingdoms
You ever wanted a real isekai that doesn’t revolve around some loser getting trucked into a power fantasy? Meet The Twelve Kingdoms.
Our girl Youko Nakajima is yeeted into a world that makes Middle-earth look like a damn playground. Politics? Check. Magic? Check. Character development so good it’ll make you question why modern isekai even exist? Hell yeah. If you want a mature, well-crafted fantasy world that actually gives a crap about world-building, this one’s a must-watch.

Moribito: Guardian of the Spirit
Anime loves throwing around the term strong female character, but most of them are just there to look hot and swing a sword. Balsa? She actually earns the title.
This absolute unit of a bodyguard takes on the job of protecting a prince who’s got supernatural baggage. The fights? Fucking amazing. The story? Surprisingly deep. The world-building? Chef’s kiss. And best of all—Balsa isn’t some one-dimensional action chick; she’s complex, flawed, and just downright badass.

Shakugan no Shana
Okay, listen. If you like supernatural action with a side of holy crap, my entire existence might be meaningless, then Shakugan no Shana is for you.
Yuji thinks he’s just another high school dude until he realizes he’s basically dead already. Enter Shana, a tiny but terrifying Flame Haze who wields a sword like a fucking war god. Together, they fight creatures that eat existence itself. It’s stylish, emotional, and actually has stakes—unlike half the power fantasies out there.

Scrapped Princess
Pacifica Casull is the kind of protagonist you can actually root for. She’s literally the most wanted person in the world because some prophecy says she’ll bring about the apocalypse. But instead of being a brooding edgelord about it, she’s just a normal girl trying to not get murdered.
Her siblings are total badasses, the story is both heartfelt and action-packed, and the ending actually sticks the landing—something a lot of anime fail to do.

Helck
Okay, imagine One Punch Man but instead of Saitama, you get a smiling, lovable himbo who wants to become the Demon King.
The premise sounds like a joke, but Helck somehow juggles comedy and legit emotional storytelling without faceplanting. It’s one of those series that starts off lighthearted and goofy, then pulls the rug out from under you with some dark, oh shit moments. Give it a shot, and I promise you’ll be hooked.

Haibane Renmei
Okay, this one is weirdly slept on.
If Angel Beats! was too fast-paced for you and you wanted a slow-burn existential crisis, this anime is your jam. It’s quiet, introspective, and will sneak up on you emotionally like a ninja in the night.
It follows a group of angel-like beings in a mysterious town as they try to understand their existence. Sounds simple? Oh, buddy, you have no idea.

From the New World
This one is criminally underrated, and I will die on this hill.
From the New World is one of those anime that starts slow but oh man, once it gets going, you will not be okay. The story takes place in a dystopian future where humanity has psychic abilities, and let’s just say things go horribly wrong.
It’s dark. It’s eerie. And it makes you question everything. Do yourself a favor and watch it.

Now and Then, Here and There
Oh, you thought fantasy anime was all cute elves and friendship power-ups? Sweet summer child. This one will break you. Imagine getting isekai’d into a post-apocalyptic wasteland where child soldiers are a thing, water is rarer than a good live-action anime adaptation, and hope dies faster than your motivation to exercise. This show is raw, brutal, and absolutely phenomenal. If you can stomach the pain, watch it.

Rokka: Braves of the Six Flowers
Alright, picture this: you and five other badasses are chosen to save the world. Only problem? There are seven of you. Someone’s an impostor, and you all have to figure out who before you get yeeted into oblivion. It’s part fantasy, part murder mystery, and a whole lot of “trust issues the anime.” Seriously, it’s criminal that more people don’t talk about this show.
Kurozuka
Ever wondered what it’s like to be immortal? Sounds dope, right? WRONG. Kurozuka throws you into a centuries-spanning nightmare where a dude named Kuro falls for a mysterious woman and gets pulled into a never-ending cycle of blood, betrayal, and badassery. It’s got action, a killer soundtrack, and enough weirdness to keep you glued to the screen. Also, vampires. Need I say more?
Final Words (AKA Your Call to Action, You Lazy Anime-Lover)
There you have it—10 fantasy anime that deserve way more love than they get. Now, I know what you’re thinking: “But what if I don’t like them?” Well, then you have bad taste, and that’s not my problem. But seriously, if you’re tired of watching the same overhyped shows over and over, give these a shot. You might just find your new favorite anime.
Now, go forth, binge responsibly, and remember: anime is life, but hydration is important too.
