Bounty No. 1

Christman Genipperteinga is a possibly mythical German serial killer and bandit said to have lived in the 16th century. Between 1569 and 1581, he allegedly claimed the lives of 964 individuals. While accounts of his supposed crimes emerged shortly after his death in 1581, historians remain doubtful about his existence. Similar tales of serial-killing bandits circulated throughout the Holy Roman Empire during and after his purported lifetime.

Biography

Genipperteinga was said to have been born in Körpen, a town approximately two miles from Köln. As an adult, he lived in a cleverly concealed cave complex about a mile from Bergkessel. The cave was skillfully designed to mimic a regular house, complete with cellars, rooms, and chambers. From 1569 to 1581, he preyed on travelers passing through the area, earning a reputation so fearsome that only groups of five or more dared to traverse the region, believing they might stand a chance of avoiding his wrath.

Some versions of the story suggest that he resorted to cannibalism, consuming his victims’ flesh after killing them. Genipperteinga often looted and murdered alongside a gang of accomplices. However, his greed and insatiable appetite for wealth and power ensured no one lasted long in his group. After his men helped him transport the loot back to his cave, he would reportedly serve them poisoned ale, killing them to keep the spoils for himself. He disposed of their bodies by dumping them down a mine shaft connected to his cave network.

In 1574, Genipperteinga ambushed a young woman, referred to as Dorothea in some accounts, as she traveled to join her family in Trier. Rather than killing her as intended, he abducted her and forced her to return to his cave under the threat of death. He compelled her to swear an oath in God’s name never to betray him. For the next seven years, Dorothea endured life as his captive and sex slave. To prevent her escape, he chained her ankle whenever he left the cave to hunt for new victims.

During her captivity, Dorothea bore six children by Genipperteinga, all of whom he murdered shortly after their birth. He allegedly strangled them with his hands, with later accounts claiming he consumed their hearts afterward. He hung their lifeless bodies from a nearby tree, and when the wind caused the corpses to sway, he would mockingly declare that they were dancing.

In May 1581, Genipperteinga reluctantly granted Dorothea’s request to visit her family in Trier, on the condition that she reaffirm her vow never to betray him. Karl Friedrich Wilhelm Großmann (13 December 1863 – 5 July 1922), commonly known as Carl Großmann, was a German serial killer and rapist active in the Berlin district of Friedrichshain. Between 1918 and 1921, he was responsible for the murders of at least twenty women. Großmann took his own life while awaiting the conclusion of his trial, leaving behind no full confession of his crimes.

Biography

Karl Friedrich Großmann was born to Karl Friedrich Großmann and Marie Dorothea Sophie Prößel in Alt Ruppin, Germany. His childhood was marred by physical abuse from his alcoholic father, who forced him to conceal his injuries. From a young age, Großmann exhibited aggressive tendencies and a fascination with blood and animal slaughter. He often sneaked into the local butcher shop to observe the process, captivated by the sight.

As a child, Großmann assisted with his father’s merchant business and cared for the family’s goats. His unusual fondness for the animals earned him the nickname “Zickenkarl” (“Nanny Goat Karl”) among neighbors. Großmann left school in the third grade and took a job at a local fabric factory, marking the beginning of his work life.

Crimes

In the late 1890s, Großmann was unable to secure a permanent job and became a wanderer traveling across southern Germany, mostly the Franconian area of Bavaria, earning a livelihood by stealing, selling, and begging. During this period, he was incarcerated at least 24 times for sex offenses against underage girls, assault, trespassing, petty burglary, and bestiality. He was first charged with raping a four-year-old child. After Großmann was found guilty of sodomizing a goat and assaulting a twelve-year-old girl, he received the longest of these sentences at Nuremberg.

After being released from prison in 1914, Karl Großmann moved to Berlin, where he rented a modest flat near the Ostbahnhof rail station. To make ends meet, he ran a sausage stand and sold meat on the black market. However, beneath this seemingly ordinary life, Großmann harbored a dark secret: he was a serial killer who targeted vulnerable women.

Großmann would approach women, many of whom had recently moved to Berlin, offering them jobs as housekeepers or domestic help. Once inside his flat, he would overpower and rape them. Some women were released after swearing not to report him, while others were murdered. Afterward, Großmann would accuse them of stealing from him and report them to the police.

The majority of his victims were low-income women, including sex workers, mothers, and laborers. Großmann took advantage of Berlin’s turbulent political climate, where the police were preoccupied with quelling riots and protests, allowing him to evade suspicion despite multiple investigations.

In one case, a 15-year-old girl accused Großmann of digitally compromising her, but the case was dismissed due to her being a homeless fugitive. Two other women who accused Großmann of rape were ignored by the police, largely because they were known prostitutes. The discovery of mutilated human remains in the Luisenstadt Canal of the Spree River led to a thorough investigation. Between May and August 1921, at least 23 female body parts were found. The only victims identified were Frieda Schubert and Johanna Sosnowski.

When Großmann was arrested in August 1921, his reign of terror came to an end. During his trial, rumors circulated that he had sold human remains as meat, but these claims were never verified. The case shocked and enraged the public.

Großmann’s ability to evade detection for so long was largely due to the social mores of the time. Women, especially those from low-income backgrounds, were routinely ignored and marginalized. Police forces were also overburdened with maintaining public order. Although Großmann’s crimes were eventually exposed, his case highlighted the need for greater protection and support for vulnerable women. It underscored the importance of thorough investigations and the necessity for law enforcement to treat all criminal reports with the utmost seriousness.

Today, we journey to a new corner of the world. In this blog, we embark on an exploration to uncover a mystery that shook an entire country to its core. How can something as unassuming as a scrap market spark a chain reaction of fear across a nation? Without further delay, let us hop on a bus and head to the district of Mayapuri, located in the heart of India’s capital, Delhi.

The Origin

Before we dive into the heart of today’s story, let’s take a quick look at Mayapuri. Situated in West Delhi, India, Mayapuri is an industrial community with a rich history. Once a bustling hub for small-scale and heavy metal industries, much of it faded after government sanctions. Today, the area is a blend of car repair shops, scrap markets, and light metal industries.

One of Mayapuri’s biggest industries is the recycling of metal waste, while selling used car parts has also become a significant economic activity. In fact, Mayapuri is often considered one of India’s largest markets for secondhand industrial and automotive spare parts. Traders from all over India flock here to buy and sell used car components. The area is dotted with tiny workshops, each specializing in various types of metals, contributing to the region’s unique industrial identity.

The Nuclear Disaster

The title says it all—from the biggest scrap market to the biggest nuclear disaster in the country. It all began on February 26th, 2010, when several people suddenly died and eight others had to be hospitalized. The doctors examining the patients were horrified beyond belief. Why? Because the symptoms were unlike anything they had ever seen before. The patients showed signs of heavy hair loss, severe skin pigmentation, intense dizziness, and, most shockingly, their flesh was rotting. It wasn’t the result of an infection, but rather a horrifying condition where the flesh seemed as if it was about to fall off, like an apple dropping from a tree.

The doctors and nurses were beyond horrified, and the reason soon became apparent: the patients had been severely nuclear poisoned. But the question remained: how could simple laborers from a scrap market come into contact with such heavy radiation? How was this even possible?

Cobalt 60

In addition to its industrial uses, like radiography, cobalt-60 is also commonly used in medical therapies, particularly in radiation therapy for cancer patients. However, when disposed of incorrectly, it becomes a severe hazard. In this case, a hospital or medical facility failed to follow the correct protocols for disposing of radioactive waste, leading to the catastrophic event.

Now, you might be wondering why I’m giving you a chemistry lesson here—because it all ties back to this very substance.

By the afternoon of February 26, 2010, reports of radiation sickness began to trickle in, and the severity of the situation quickly became apparent. Several individuals had fallen ill, including seven scrap workers, some of whom were rushed to medical facilities with severe radiation burns. The discovery of radioactive contamination in such an unexpected and populated area left authorities scrambling to respond.

Within hours, Delhi Police, along with officials from the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE) and the Atomic Energy Regulatory Board (AERB), arrived at the scene. The Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC) was called in to locate the source of the radiation and assess the extent of contamination.

The immediate response involved cordoning off the area around Mayapuri to contain the radiation and protect the surrounding population. Emergency medical units were dispatched, and local residents were advised to stay clear of the site. A cleanup effort was launched to remove contaminated items, and radiation treatment kits were provided to those affected by the spill. Radiation monitoring teams were set up to inspect nearby businesses and communities for potential exposure.

The Mayapuri incident sparked fears of a greater radioactive leak in Delhi, and despite the authorities’ best efforts at crisis management, it escalated into a full-scale catastrophe. In the wake of the massive public concern, news outlets like the Hindustan Times worked diligently to debunk rumors and provide accurate, up-to-date information to the city’s residents. The incident was rated 4 out of 7 on the scale of nuclear disasters.

Government Response

In the aftermath of the Mayapuri incident, the Indian government and regulatory organizations were compelled to act swiftly. The AERB, responsible for overseeing radiation safety, launched a comprehensive investigation into how Cobalt-60 had ended up in the scrap market. It was discovered that the radioactive material had been improperly disposed of by a private corporation that had failed to properly decommission its medical equipment.

In response to this event, the Indian government introduced several policy changes to strengthen regulations surrounding the disposal of radioactive materials and e-waste. Both the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE) and the AERB issued stricter standards for processing and disposing of radioactive waste. Additionally, the Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC) and other environmental agencies began advocating for better waste segregation and recycling practices.

One of the first steps in addressing the crisis was a public health campaign aimed at educating the residents of Mayapuri and surrounding areas about the dangers of radiation exposure and how they could protect themselves. Unit 731: A Horror In Real Life

‘Tis of Unit 731, a tale most dire,

Of secrets kept, and horrors that conspire.

A chapter in the annals of human strife,

That doth reveal the darkness of the human life.

Unit 731—this term may be unfamiliar to most, yet history knows it well. No, it is not a legal code or regulation, but rather a harrowing and inhuman chapter that defies the bounds of sanity. Unit 731 of Japan was a facility responsible for developing biological weapons, conducting experiments, and researching diseases to further their bioweapons agenda.

Now, while many are aware of humanity’s darker chapters—of nations developing and testing bioweapons—what makes Unit 731 stand out? Why does this specific unit remain a singular emblem of cruelty and horror?

The Origins

Established in 1936, Unit 731—short for Manchu Detachment 731 and also known as the Kamo Detachment—was located in Pingfang, Harbin, Heilongjiang, Manchukuo (now part of China). This unit was responsible for some of the most horrifying and brutal war crimes committed by the Japanese armed forces.

Human subjects, who were dehumanized and referred to as “logs,” were subjected to experiments in facilities called “log cabins.” The atrocities committed there were beyond imagination, encompassing:

Disease injections,
Controlled dehydration,
Biological weapons testing,
Hypobaric pressure chamber experiments,
Vivisection,
Organ harvesting,
Amputation, and
Standard weapons testing.

While many are familiar with the inhumane acts of Adolf Hitler, few are aware of the threat posed by Unit 731. Victims were kidnapped from across China and other regions, including prisoners of war. Selections were indiscriminate—men, women, and even children were taken. However, the unit had a preference for women, particularly pregnant ones.

The victims were subjected to unthinkable horrors: they were raped, tortured for days, and experimented on in cruel ways. Some experiments were disturbingly simple, such as testing how much pain a human could endure or how long someone could survive without food or water.

One chilling experiment involved forcing a prisoner to place their hand inside a machine with a small hole and multiple saw blades. They were told that if they screamed, their hand would be severed from their body. As the machine activated, the blades slowly dissected their hand into pieces. The agony experienced by the victims was unimaginable, and most died from the sheer pain and trauma on the spot.

Unit 731 was like the ominous area from childhood tales—the place where anyone who entered was never seen again. While most experiments were conducted within the unit itself, there were instances where biological weapons were tested in various parts of China. For example, water sources were deliberately contaminated, leading to widespread devastation in Chinese cities.

Before the establishment of Unit 731 in Pingfang, Unit Tōgō operated in the Zhongma Fortress, a prison and experimentation camp in Beiyinhe, a village about 100 kilometers (62 miles) south of Harbin along the South Manchuria Railway. The prisoners brought to Zhongma included common criminals, captured bandits, anti-Japanese partisans, political prisoners, and individuals falsely accused by the Kempeitai (Japanese military police).

Prisoners were initially well-fed, receiving rice or wheat, meat, fish, and occasionally alcohol to ensure they were in normal health at the start of experiments. But soon after, they were subjected to inhumane treatment—systematically drained of blood, deprived of food and water, and left to deteriorate while their declining health was meticulously recorded. Many were vivisected without anesthesia. Others were deliberately infected with plague bacteria and other pathogens.

In the autumn of 1934, a prison break jeopardized the secrecy of Zhongma Fortress, and a suspected sabotage-related explosion in 1935 further compromised the facility. These events prompted Ishii Shiro, the unit’s head, to shut down Zhongma Fortress. He was then authorized to establish a new, much larger facility in Pingfang, approximately 24 kilometers (15 miles) south of Harbin, which became the infamous Unit 731.

Experiments

In their experiments, Unit 731 purposefully introduced disease-causing compounds into captives, primarily Chinese civilians and prisoners of war (POWs). Subjects were also exposed to bombs that released infectious substances, which infected them upon contact with their skin. Those who did not succumb to infections were executed for postmortem examinations, and there are no records indicating any survivors of these studies. Researchers often used potassium cyanide or chloroform to kill survivors after the experiments.

To obtain specific organ specimens, the Tōgō Unit employed horrific methods. If Ishii Shiro or his colleagues wished to study the human brain, guards were ordered to find a “suitable sample.” The inmate would be taken from their cell, restrained by one guard while another split their head open with an axe. The brain would then be extracted and taken to the pathologist before the remains were disposed of through cremation.

At just 14 years old, Hideo Shimizu became part of the fourth group of juveniles assigned to Unit 731, thanks to a former school instructor’s recommendation. He later recalled being brought to a specimen room filled with jars of various sizes, some as tall as an adult. Inside the jars were human body parts, including preserved hands and heads, stored in formalin. One jar contained a pregnant woman’s abdomen, with the lower portion exposed to reveal a hairy fetus.

Shimizu also learned the term “logs” was deliberately used to dehumanize inmates, and the housing facilities were referred to as “log cabins,” further stripping the prisoners of their humanity.

Weapon Testing

Human targets were used to test grenades placed at various distances and in different positions. Victims were also subjected to flamethrowers. To evaluate the effects of pathogen-releasing bombs, chemical weapons, explosive bombs, bayonets, knives, and shrapnel bombs with varying fragment counts, prisoners were tied to stakes and used as living targets.

Chinese prisoners were exposed to direct bomb blasts to study the most effective treatments for Japanese soldiers with shrapnel wounds sustained on the battlefield. Victims were strapped, uncovered, to wooden planks staked into the ground at progressively greater distances from a bomb that was then detonated.

For some, the aftermath involved surgery to study the injuries in real-time. For others, it ended in autopsies to analyze the effects of the blasts.

Frostbite Test

To carry out his experiments, Army Engineer Hisato Yoshimura took prisoners outside and submerged their limbs in water at various temperatures, leaving them exposed until the limbs froze solid. Once frozen, Yoshimura struck the injured limbs with a short stick, producing “a sound resembling that of a board being struck.” After chipping away the ice, he applied various treatments to the afflicted areas to observe their effects.

Yoshimura’s methods earned him the nicknames “cold-blooded animal” and “scientific devil” from the Unit’s military personnel due to his unrelenting strictness, role in mass murders, and barbaric experiments. One particularly cruel act involved soaking the fingers of a three-day-old infant in ice and salt water to study the effects of freezing temperatures on human flesh.

Rape and forced pregnancy

Female inmates at Unit 731 were coerced into becoming pregnant to facilitate experiments. The torture was justified by the fabricated risk of vertical disease transmission (from mother to child), particularly syphilis. Researchers were primarily interested in studying fetal survival rates and the effects on the mother’s reproductive system.

Although “a large number of babies were born in captivity,” no survivors—including the children—have ever been reported from Unit 731. It is believed that the babies were either aborted or killed shortly after birth. Women were also subjected to sexual experiments, bacteriological and physiological tests, and sex crimes, while male inmates were often used in isolated studies to ensure that the results would not be influenced by external factors.

This practice was starkly highlighted by the testimony of a unit member who worked as a guard, shedding light on the horrifying reality of these experiments.

Conclusion

The total deaths associated with Unit 731 and its atrocities are estimated to be around 400,000. This dark chapter in history stands as a testament to immense destruction and the blackest moments of humanity’s past.
