The Cage
Inside the cage I stand,
Looking out, trying to look out.
The world that binds me,
Holds me captive,
My home, where I’m comfortable.
My masters, kind and generous,
Taking care of my needs,
Making sure I’m comfy,
Making sure I don’t want to leave.
Indeed, this cage, with its gilded bars,
I love running my hands along those.
The floor under my feet,
Like home, where I’m safest,
Where I’m coziest.
Feels warm,
Unreal, this feeling,
Makes me uneasy too.
Like in a snowy landscape,
White all over,
Pure yet screams of dangers,
How easily we are deceived.
When the healing glare,
The rejuvenating burn,
When it doesn’t shine upon us,
When we get tainted by purity,
We feel warm inside,
Just for a moment,
Yet, that very moment lulls us,
Pulls us into a sleep, the deepest sleep.
Freedom? Isn’t being alone,
Being you, without any masks,
Freedom in itself?
Where others take care of you,
Where you don’t have to think for yourself,
Isn’t that the best life?
You just do what you’re told,
Without having to think,
To consider the results,
The consequences.
But what do I know about freedom?
My gray life, shadowy and murky,
Has it ever seen the Sun,
The orb of life,
Cheerful and full of colour?
Even if I have heard praises,
Glorifying it’s grandeur,
It’s ability to make people cry joyfully,
Can I, who has lost his tears, dare to imagine?
Am I allowed to imagine,
To dream?
Well, isn’t it the only thing I have left?
In this gilded cage, where the orange flames don’t reach,
Where I’m protected, safe,
The path where none tread,
The womb where I are my brothers,
The graveyard where myselves lie.
This cage, my mind,
Teeming with worlds,
Where I reign supreme,
Infinite, but still limited,
Real, but still imaginary.
I hear it,
Their sound,
Calling me,
Making me a captive,
These chains around my neck,
Around my whole body,
Slowly dissolving,
Melting away.
Ain’t I an idiot,
A naive fool?
For in my hand,
All this time, I had it,
The key to escape, to run away.
Closing my eyes, I reach out,
To the warmth, the Sun, The whole world,
The key clicks and turns,
And I drift off.
